I’m not a Paris Hilton fan. I believe those in the public eye have a responsibilty to younger audiences and I’ve never agreed with Paris’ brazen slutiness (for lack of a better word) This morning I watched her new video on VH1. The girl can sing AND she obviously has some great writers and production behind her. Her voice isn’t particularly substantial (oddly enough, like her somehow?) but it’s pleasant and she seems to have a good sense of phrasing. It’s a shame that her usual over-the-top-sex-in-your-face approach to life in general, also ruined this video. The images so contrasted with the voice that I, initially, I was suspect that it was even her singing. As a singer myself, I was conflicted–I wanted to give respect to the voice but the woman containing that voice is so seemingly unworthy of respect. Paris, I hope you learn that you are worth more than your body. You don’t have to sell that, honey. And I’m no prude–sexuality is a god-given gift. I’d consider re-shooting that video and maybe allowing your creative team to do more for you than just letting you have your way or simply showing you off in skimpy, boring attire. I’ll bet there was at least one member of that team that had better ideas for that video, ideas that FIT THE SONG. Paris,if you want to be taken for a real ”artist” and not just a socialite who paid somebody so she could be a pop star, look a little deeper. Hearing you sing that song (damn, I don’t even know the name...”what this love can do” maybe?) made me see that you truly might have a little something more to offer. And to respect...someday.
